Conversational Prayer-Sonnets and Scriptures

March 22 ~

Has not the one God made and sustained for us the spirit of life? And what does he desire? Godly offspring. So take heed to yourselves, and let none be faithless to the wife of his youth. "For I hate divorce, says the LORD the God of Israel ... So take heed to yourselves and do not be faithless" ... '"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined inseparably to his wife; and they two shall become so completely one that they shall be no longer two persons but one" ... What God has united man must not separate' ...
Mal.2:15,16 (RSV); Matt.19:5,6 (Bar)

Oxymora - 3: Marriage Vows*

An oxymoron: Marriage Vows? Why such?

Because these days such vows don't count for much.
The bride and groom say they'll be one until
"death do us part," but such is not their will.
A wedded pair perhaps they might remain
as long as love might last between the twain!

What of the will to love whilst they should last
alive upon this Earth? In days now past
both hearts and wills were matched! The pledged intent
bore weight! Commitment! What was said was meant!
The star-eyed bride e'en dared pledge to obey
her spouse! Such courage now has passed away ...

Then what is left? A sweet formality
which can't, of course, be taken seriously ...

As the church is subject to Christ, so too wives must be in everything subject to their husbands. Husbands, you must love your wives, as Christ too loved the church and gave himself for it ... "You are My friends, if you do what I command you ... This I command you, that you love one another" ... Love never dies ... Love never ends ... God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him ...
Eph.5:24-25 (Bar); Jn.15:14,17 (NAS); 1 Cor.13:8 (Beck,RSV); 1 Jn.4:16 (RSV).
